  11. This document describes Progressive Networks' RealAudio Player.

  18. On-line help is available for the RealAudio player in a Windows
  19. help file called RAPLAYER.HLP

  22. Installation
  23.  
  24. There are two different RealAudio Players available for Windows:
  25.  
  26. * RealAudio Player for Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11
  27.   The installer for this player is called RA16_2B3.exe
  28.   This is a 16 bit Windows application.
  29.  
  30. * RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  31.   The installer for this player is called RA32_2B3.exe
  32.   This is a 32 bit Windows application.  It requires a
  33.   32 bit winsock.
  34.  
  35. To install, execute the installer under Windows.
  36. If you want to control where and how RealAudio is installed,
  37. use Custom Setup.  The default installation location is
  38. C:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  39.  
  40. The RealAudio Player for Windows 95 and Windows NT
  41. consists of the following files:
  42.  
  43. In C:\RAPLAYER (or the directory specified under Custom Setup):
  44. RAPLAYER.EXE, RAPLAYER.HLP, README.TXT,
  45. START.RAM, COMPLETE.RA, THANKYOU.RA

  47. In Windows System directory:
  48. RA32.DLL, RA3228_8.DLL, RAGUI32.DLL

  50. If you installed the RealAudio Plug-In, then in the
  51. plugins directory of your browser:

  66. System Requirements
  67.  
  68. To play RealAudio files, your system must meet
  69. the following requirements:
  70.  
  71.    * 486/33 SX or better PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1x,
  72.      Windows NT or Windows 95
  73.  
  74.    * 8 megabytes RAM.
  75.  
  76.    * 2 megabytes free disk space.
  77.  
  78.    * A sound card with a Windows Sound driver.
  79.      (The RealAudio Player is not compatible with the
  80.      PC Speaker program or other software programs which
  81.      simulate a sound card.)
  82.  
  83.    * An Internet Connection. Either a direct connection
  84.      or a 14.4K Baud or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  85.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.
  86.  
  87.    * RealAudio for Windows 95 or Windows NT requires a
  88.      32 bit winsock.
  89.  
  90. RealAudio now offers 28.8 content.  To listen to
  91. RealAudio 28.8, you need:
  92.  
  93.    * 486/66 DX or better running Microsoft Windows 3.1x,
  94.      Windows 95, or Windows NT.

  96.    * An Internet Connection.  Either a direct connection
  97.      or a 28.8K Baud or better modem with a SLIP or PPP
  98.      connection to an Internet Service Provider.

  102. New Features
  103.  
  104.   * RealAudio 28.8 - RealAudio 28.8 is a new algorithm that provides
  105.    enhanced sound quality to all people who have a 28.8 baud modem
  106.    or better connection to the Internet. This near-FM (mono) sound
  107.    quality greatly enhances the clarity of music and voice delivered
  108.    in real time over the Internet.  RealAudio 28.8 is now available
  109.    for Windows 3.1 users who have 486/66 computers and 28.8 modems.

  111.   * Plug-in - The new RealAudio Plug-in for Netscape Navigator allows
  112.     content creators to seemlessly integrate RealAudio directly
  113.     into their Web page layouts. RealAudio for Windows 3.1 now supports
  114.     the RealAudio Plug-in.

  116.   * Improved Performance - RealAudio Beta 3 has better performance
  117.     than RealAudio Beta 2.
  118.  
  119.   * Firewall Proxy Support - RealAudio Beta 3 supports the RealAudio
  120.     Proxy allowing safe access to RealAudio content through firewalls.

  125.   * TCP-only Audio Delivery - RealAudio Beta 3 supports receiving audio
  126.     via TCP-only.  If your site blocks UDP delivery, please select

  128.     the option menu.

  144. Sound Quality
  145.  
  146. Audio is transmitted to the RealAudio player in the RealAudio
  147. format.  The player then by default produces 16 bit
  148. 8 Kilohertz sound. If you hear garbled audio then you can change
  149. the kind of sound the RealAudio player produces.  To change the
  150. kind of sound produced, please pull down the "View" menu and
  151. choose "Options". Select "Advanced" and you will see toggle boxes
  152. for "use 8 bit" and "use 11 Khz":
  153.  
  154.    * 16 bit  8 Kilohertz (default)
  155.    *  8 bit  8 Kilohertz (select use 8 bit)
  156.    * 16 bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 11 Khz)
  157.    *  8 bit 11 Kilohertz (select use 8 bit and use 11 Khz)

  159. If you receive poor quality audio, please see our 
  160. FAQ entry on audio quality by going to 
  161. http://www.realaudio.com/help.html and choose FAQ.  From there,
  162. select the "Audio Quality" entry.
  163.  
  164. Please note that to receive RealAudio 28.8 you must have at least
  165. a 19.2KBaud connection to your Internet Service Provider.

  169. Known Problems
  170.  
  171.    * Having large applications open may prevent the RealAudio
  172.      installer from executing.  If this happens, please close
  173.      all other applications and then install.
  174.  
  175.    * Starting or quitting large applications while playing
  176.      RealAudio can cause some brief disruption of the playback.
  177.  
  178.    * Playback on some 486/25 SX computers does not work properly.
  179.  
  180.    * The user interface during playback of 28.8 content on slower
  181.      systems may have slow response time.  Performance of other
  182.      applications may suffer during playback.
  183.  
  184.    * The 16 bit RealAudio Player does not work correctly under Windows NT.
  185.      If you use Windows NT, please use the 32 bit RealAudio Player and
  186.      a 32 bit winsock.

  190. Browser Upgrade
  191.  
  192. After you upgrade your browser, you may lose the configuration 
  193. information for the RealAudio player. The easiest way to 
  194. re-configure your browser is to re-install the player.
  195. Alternatively, you can manually configure your browser:

  197.    * Viewer name: c:\RAPLAYER\RAPLAYER.EXE
  198.    * Mime Type: audio
  199.    * Mime Subtype: x-pn-realaudio

  205. Audible Defects
  206.  
  207. There are occasional audible defects that are evident when
  208. playing audio clips. To help our continuous quality improvement
  209. plans, we would appreciate it if you could submit a problem
  210. report telling us which clip and where in the clip the defect is.

  216. In the event that RealAudio Setup was unable to find a Web Browser,
  217. please check our on-line help information for detailed instructions on
  218. how to configure your web browser.   On-line information is available

  222. Please be sure to send us a problem report if you have to manually
  223. configure the RealAudio Player for a supported Web Browser.
